No Quick Fixes, Friends
I can't tell you how many times I have heard this from clients. All coming to me out of total frustration over symptoms they know aren't “normal”, but are either told everything looks fine, or are prescribed meds for anxiety, depression, or something else that just doesn't make sense to them.
Today, I had a sweet new client tell me she is frustrated over labs she had done. She felt like the issues she went to her doctor for were all but ignored. Instead of addressing her concerns about her thyroid (her thyroid labs were out of range) and her hormones, she left with a recommendation to take Vitamin D and an Rx for iron (despite having no iron labs ran at all). But to add the final insult, her provider told her she might just need anti-anxiety medication.
I had another client tell me she has learned more about her body and menstrual cycle from Tik Tok than from doctors. (YIKES!)
Women aren't feeling heard or validated. For a wide range of issues.
BUT…another thing I've noticed is women taking back power over their health. They are beginning to listen to their bodies and are looking for solutions.
They're seeking alternative care outside the traditional medical model. Physicians these days are overworked, see too many patients, have no time for continuing education, and are in a system that is heavily influenced by the big money in Big Pharma.
My goal as a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner is to help bridge the gap between that system and an alternative system that is centered around the whole person. I have the time to spend with my client to LISTEN to them. Their whole history.
I care about your health history, your nutrition, your digestion, how well you are hydrating yourself, what products you use, how you are sleeping, how you are moving your body, how you are managing the stress in your life, and yes, what your poop looks like. Because all of this tells a story of what is going on with you. Every system is connected. Dysfunction and imbalances don't stay isolated. Our bodies are like a spider web, you can't tug on one side without shaking the whole thing.
We need to stop looking for quick fixes to solve all our problems. Because, in reality, we can be mad at the current system, but we helped to create it. When we expect a pill, a shot, or [insert whatever other quick fix here] to do the work we aren't willing to do, how can we expect a system to give us anything different. Until we start taking accountability and are willing to take the time needed to correct imbalances, we really can't blame our medical system. There are no quick fixes that are consequence free. Those medication commercials will make your head spin with all the side effects listed. You have to find someone who not only will listen, dig deep, and help you understand your body and symptoms, but you also have to be willing to give your body grace and take the time needed to get you to where you want to be. The time it takes when you are struggling with fertility can be 4-9 months.
I know this seems like a crazy long time, but it’s much easier with a solid plan in place that’s based 100% on you and not some random Tik Tok advice. It’s also much easier when you have someone walking alongside you, to ask questions and lean on when the road gets bumpy.
